A thick ice field has been formed at the top of the Kandalaksha Bay, but a large part of the gulf and the White Sea basin are not frozen.
There are no clearings near the biostation, but right after the Velikiy island, there is open water. The shallow coastal area of the Karelian shore is also clear from ice. Eiders have places where they can wait out the frosts.
